PEOPLE like reading biographies. They give glimpses of the unique experience of other people's lives, and let you learn about former times and other countries. Quite naturally, physicists like reading biographies of their colleagues too. That is why I hoped this book by Victor Frenkel about-his father, the Russian theoretical physicist Yakov Frenkel, would be fascinating. Indeed, Frenkel is a very interesting figure. Born in 1894, he was the same age as the Nobel - Prize winners Peter Kapitza, Nikolay Semenov and Igor Tamm, and belonged to the generation of the young founders of physics in the Soviet Union after the revolution of 19.17. As a young but mature physicist, he lived through a time of great changes both in his country and his discipline.
