In your news story on potential cuts to UKscience funding (August p8), you state thatUK contributions to the LHCb project atCERN would be cut by 5%, not 25% asoriginally planned. In fact, although a cutof 5% was recommended by the ParticlePhysics Consultation Panel (of which Iwas a member), the UK Science andTechnology Facilities Council imposed a10% cut. The confusion might be due to thefact that a 5% cut was imposed in the firstfinancial year (2008/9) and 10% for theyears thereafter. However, given that theannouncement was made when the projectwas already nearly half-way through the2008/9 financial year, this amounted toan immediate 10% cut for that financialyear also.
