This situation is almost the same for most astro-nomical observations. We cannot prepare stars andgalaxies in any state that we want, but we can observevast numbers of them and we can treat them as ap-proximately isolated. Hence, in astronomy we alsohave a justification for distinguishing between lawsand initial conditions.
