Two-thirds of US teenagers say they arediscouraged from pursuing a career inscience, technology, engineering ormathematics (STEM), according to asurvey released last month. The mainbarrier, the survey finds, is the lack ofencouragement from appropriate tutors.Of the 501 respondents, who were allaged between 12 and17, 31% say thatthey are dissuaded from an STEM careerbecause they do not know anyone in thefield who might mentor them, while 28%say they do not understand whatscientists do on a day-to-day basis.
