Using the data on the number of staffsubmissions to the RAE to create anoverall national quality profile, 17.6% ofUK physics research submitted to the RAEis at the 4* level, compared with 17.0% and16.0% for chemistry and earth sciences. However, physics fares worse at the nextlevel down, with just 39.2% at 3*,compared with 46.8% and 48.1% forchemistry and earth sciences. If onecreates tables of GPAs (grade pointaverages), as both Physics World and theTimes Higher Education did, the nationalGPA for physics is 2.65, compared with2.79 for chemistry and 2.73 for earthsciences. Indeed, the GPA for physics islower than that of most other scientific andengineering disciplines.
