The current furore surrounding nanotechnology makes it difficult to assess progress in this field. A clear breakthrough, however, is the recent creation of 3D binary superlatices of magnetic nanocrystals and semiconductor quantum dots by Chris Murray of IBM Research and co-workers in the US. The properties of these new materials can be tuned by controlling the size, shape and chemical identity of particles on the nanoscale (F Redl et al. 2003 Nature 423 968-971).
