As a child, I went to a summer camp called Flying Moose Lodge in a remote part of Maine. The camp took its name from a colonial-era legend involving a drunken backwoodsman who went hunting a moose. Frustrated by the moose's elusive actions, the hunter tried to outwit the creature by cutting through the woods to a nearby peak, where it was plainly heading. Clambering to the summit, he was astounded to discover that the moose was nowhere in sight.
