THE Aharonov-Bohm effect and the Berry phase are topological phase shifts that affect quantum interference patterns. Both phase shifts were first predicted theoretically, and then observed experimentally. Now Yakir Aharonov, who proposed the former with the late David Bohm in 1959, and co-workers have shown that these two phases add together in a non-trivial way. Moreover, this interplay can reveal properties of the system that are difficult to observe directly (Y Aharonov et al. 1994 Phys. Rev. Leu. 73 918).
