What attracts students to study physics at university? A recent survey of more than 1700 first-year physics undergraduates in the UK confirmed what many people had suspected on anecdortal evidence: they are fascinated by fundamental physics, and especially particle physics and astrophysics. Their interest in these subjects-largely outside the post-16 A-level syllabus-is kindled by inspirational tachers and by television science programmes. In addition, a number of high-profile popular books have surely played an important part.
