Many readers will have heard about the surprising deduction that the expansion of the universe is not decelerating. Two independent teams of astronomers have found that distant supernovae are fainter - and hence further away - than expected for a given expansion velocity. If these supernovae are representative of their local counterparts, it implies that there must be a component of cosmic energy in addition to the gravitating matter that causes the universe to accelerate.
