WE ALL know that a compass points roughly towards the north pole, but this has not always been the' case. A million years ago the same compass would have pointed towards the south pole. Indeed, the field has reversed direction almost randomly at intervals of a million years or less throughout the Earth's history. What causes these abrupt changes and, even more puzzling, why are they so chaotic?
