PEOPLE have been fascinated by the polar aurora for centuries. Particularly entrancing are the silent, currtain-like lights that can be seen in the night sky during a trip to northern Scandinavia, for example, or from the windows of a transatlantic jet flying the polar route. Once seen they are never forgotten.
