SINCE the discovery of colossal magneto resistance - a remarkable effect in which materials lose almost all electrical resistance in the presence of an applied magnetic field - physicists have been attempting to understand the fundamental mechanisms of the process. In parallel, many groups are investigating different chemical compounds and structures that depend on the applied magnetic field or temperature in different ways.
