The year 2300 is so distant that one may be forgiven for thinking of it only in terms of science fiction. But this is the year that workers at the Dounreay power station in Northern Scotland -the UK's only centre for research into "fast" nucleai reactors - term as the "end point" by which time the site will be completely clear of radioactive material. More than 180 facilities - including the iconic dome that housed the Dounreay Fast Reactor (DFR) -were built at at the site since it opened in 1959, with almost 50 having been used to handle radioactive material.
