I found the "Map of physics" in the20th anniversary issue of Physics World(October pp36-37) fascinating, puzzlingand ultimately illuminating. The physics Istudied at school and university consistedof Newton's laws, Maxwell's equations, theproperties of materials, fluid mechanics,thermodynamics, sound, optics, light,radioactivity and quantum mechanics—all the knowledge needed to understandthe behaviour of the world around us in a practical sense. In a career of almost40 years in a physics-based industry, inboth technical and managerial roles,I have found this wisdom invaluable,as it provided an overview of the worldthat balances the deep but often narrowknowledge of the various disciplinesof engineering.
