Shortly after he was sworn in as US energysecretary earlier this year, the Nobel-prize-winning physicist Steven Chu discussed whathe called the "energy challenge" during avisit to the Brookhaven National Laboratoryon Long Island. The challenge, accordingto Chu, is threefold. First, US national secur-ity as well as economic prosperity depends&on the availability of clean and affordableenergy. Second, competition for energy re-sources threatens to spark geopolitical con-flict. Third, the development of alternativeenergy sources that do not depend on fossilfuels is critical to address climate change.
