When Physics World carried out a readers'survey to mark its 20th anniversary in Oc-tober 2008, in the main the editors took alight-hearted approach. They asked readersto answer nine multiple-choice questionson matters such as who inspired them to dophysics, whether they mind being unpopularat parties, and what was the top physicsdiscovery of the previous 20 years. A sum-mary of the results appeared last year on thephysicsworld. com blog (22 December 2008). But one question was more serious:"Which of the following reflects your viewson science and religion?" Readers wereoffered a choice of five answers (see box). Ittakes but a glance to see that this questionsuffers the flaws of other efforts to get hardstatistics about "deep issues". I know I can-not be too critical, given that the editors de-vised the survey and you (well, 505 readers)responded. Let me just say that the questionmust have been thought up very close todeadline. But much more revealing than thedata were readers' comments.
