It was the announcement every particle physicist had been waiting for. To rapturous applause in a packed auditorium at the CERN particlephysics lab near Geneva, researchers working at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) announced the discovery of the Higgs boson - or at least a particle that closely resembles it. In two special seminars at the lab on 4 July, which were also streamed live on the Internet, spokespeople for the LHC's two main experiments - ATLAS and CMS - both reported measurements of the new boson's mass at confidence levels of 5σ. A finding that passes this statistical threshold is generally, but not always, considered a "discovery" among the particle-physics community.
