Baldev Raj laughs as he discusses the almost fantastical numbers involved in India's nuclear power programme. India is eyeing up some 200 advanced fast-breeder reactors alone in the next four to five decades -a technology yet to be demonstrated at a large commercial scale -that will help to supply 270 GW of nuclear output, a third of current global nuclear capacity. It is part of a unique three-stage plan for long-term energy security based on the so-far-untapped thorium fuel cycle.
