A new mission to search for Earth-like planets has been announced by the European Space Agency (ESA). Called the Characterising Exoplanets Satellite (Cheops), the probe will measure the brightness of stars, looking for the tiny dips in light reaching the Earth that indicate when an exoplanet passes in front of its star. Cheops is the first of a new class of small missions that are to be developed as part of ESA's science programme.
