Up to six tanks holding radioactive material at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Richland, Washington, were thought to be leaking last month as employees at the site began to evaluate 14 further tanks that also appeared to have lost liquid. Hanford - often described as the most contaminated nuclear site in the US - contains about 150 "single-shell" tanks with just one layer of steel. Many were built in the 1940s and were not expected to last more than 20 years.
