We study the attenuation rates of acoustic phonons in metallic multilayers by taking account of the band structure of the superlattices (SLs) and therefore extending the bulk metals Pippard model. The attenuations of both the extended and surface phonons in SLs are calculated and compared with the experimental damping rates of the surface vibrations in Al/Ag SLs. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
