Spin dynamics in the S-1 bond-alternating antiferromagnetic chain compound NTENP

We have investigated the spin dynamics of the nearly-ideal one-dimensional bond-alternating antiferromagnet Ni(333-tet)NO2ClO4 (alias NTENP) by inelastic neutron scattering. The measurements have been performed as a function of both the wave vector (components along and perpendicular to the chain axis around q = pi) and the temperature. Our experimental results at low temperatures show unambiguously the existence of a gapped dispersive mode in the spin-excitation spectrum. The magnetic response at q = pi is peaked at the energy Delta approximate to 1.2 meV and displays a finite energy width 2Gamma approximate to 0.3 meV at 1.5 K. As expected for a mainly magnetic mode, the gap feature shows a strong temperature dependence and vanishes almost completely above 25 K. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
