摘要

The solid #alpha#-phase of Mg_3Bi_2 does not melt directly but undergoes a phase transition to the #beta#-phase and then melts. From a neutron diffraction experiment it was concluded that #pate#-Mg_3Bi_2 is a superionic conductor in which magnesium is the mobile ion with the bismuth ions forming the rigid lattice. Two quasielastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed that confirm Mg~(2+) is indeed mobile in the #beta#-phase.
