We present a path integral formulation of the effective medium problem. The problem of computing effective static properties is reduced to the computation of a free energy. We show how to recover the perturbative results for any type of nonlinearity. We believe this formulation will be useful for finding a self-consistent expression for the effective properties of nonlinear media. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
