This project involved the use of the Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance(EQCM) to detect redox-induced changes in ion and solvent content in disulfide and thiol anchored monolayers. The EQCM will also be used to detect the monolayers' electrocatalytic effects on various organometallic cations. The EQCM simultaneously measures the current response to changes in potential with the corresponding frequency response induced by those changes. Use is made of organosulfur compounds as precursors for attachment of organometallic and organic redox couples. Several organometallic disulfides (e.g. cobalticinium and ferrocene derivatives) and organic amphiphilic thiols (e.g. viologen derivatives) have been synthesized and chemisorbed onto gold EQCMs. (JES)
