摘要

The spectral bandwidth of the signal and background components of a light flux depend upon the means of identifying the signal. Signal selectivity does not necessarily depend on the slit width of the measuring spectrometer. Thus, the large Jacquinot advantage usually given to interferometric and multiplex instruments in comparisons with dispersive spectrometers may not always apply. Treatment of the signal and background as separate noise sources leads to a simple explanation of spectrometer performance (i.e., the signal-to-noise ratio) as a function of spectrometer slit width.
