摘要

Parenteral hyperalimentation is a system of intravenous nutritional support for patients unable to consume sufficient nutrients to promote recovery from illness or trauma. This system provides nitrogen, calories, and other micronutrients in quantities that exceed basal requirements. Careful monitoring of the patient is required in order to provide the necessary nutrients without overburdening the patient's capacity to metabolize these nutrients. Much research is needed to establish the parenteral nutritional requirements of patients nourished in this manner. Current knowledge of the mechanism by which parenteral alimentation reverses the hypercatabolic state in severely ill or traumatized patients indicates that glucose serves a unique role in the recovery of the patient due to its action as a potent secretagogue of insulin.
