A series of four experimental studies were performed to establish: (1) the acid secretory pattern in rhesus monkeys, (2) the effects of restraint stress in this species on gastric acid secretion, and (3) to evaluate the association between gastric mucosal blood flow and gastric secretory function using the aminopyrine clearance technique for the determination of mucosal blood flow. The results of the data obtained from these studies indicate that the role of mucosal blood flow is passive in relation to gastric acid secretion. It was established that flow is, however, an essential component of gastric secretory function in which these two systems are regulated in a parallel fashion over a relatively wide range of gastric secretory rates.
