Studies of the effect of changes in the central parts of 'nematic' molecules indicate that the corresponding changes in nematic - isotropic transition temperatures arise from changes in the entropy of transition, not in the heat of transition as previously supposed. This is true also for the effects of projecting substituents. The results lead to some general conclusions concerning the relationship between structure and mesophase stability. (Author)
