The objectives of the work were to substantiate the existence of electrically induced molecular orientation in concentrated polypeptide solutions under constant fields and to perform a comprehensive investigation of the structures of these solutions and the mechanisms of orientation. The investigation was performed with X-ray diffraction, low angle light scattering, optical transmission, optical microscopy, and electron microscopy techniques. Results indicate that the solution is formed of micron size rodlike aggregates of polypeptide molecules. Under a constant electric field, the rods and the molecules of which they are formed orient along the field. (Author)
