摘要

The first part of the report is devoted to the study of the equation of transfer for a strong line. The objective was the development of methods which, from knowledge of temperature, density, etc., provide expressions for the source function without actually solving the transfer equation for the intensity. Only the simplest case of the two level atom is considered. The approach is to examine model problems in which the intensities in different directions are effectively decoupled. In Part 2 a perturbation method involving configuration interaction is offered to improve the calculation of atomic state wavefunctions and energy levels subsequently required for the determination of local Planck mean opacitics.
