The paradigm of multiple regression analysis is used as a basis for comparing four system identification techniques commonly used to determine human pilot describing functions: cross-correlation analysis, cross-power density spectrum analysis, orthogonal zed exponential function analysis and differential equation co-efficient methods. Relations for the expected values and variances of the measurements obtained using these methods are derived. The relative advantages of these methods for long and short sample measurements are discussed.nA method for computing estimates of the coefficients of the differential equation for the human pilot from the regression coefficients obtained from the orthogonal zed exponential analysis method is presented. Differences in describing function estimates obtained from direct open-loop measurements in which the error signal is used as the input for analysis and estimates obtained from closed-loop measurements in which the system input signal is used as the input are also discussed.nTwo methods for determining time-varying describing functions are presented: ensemble methods and quasi-stationary methods. A quasi-stationary method employing the orthogonal zed exponential function analysis technique was implemented on a digital computer and used to measure passive filter and human pilot time-varying weighting and describing functions. The passive filter measurements are compared with the theoretical time-varying weighting functions for the filters studied.
