We developed a transversely isotropic hyperelastic constitutive model to capture the anisotropy of the spinal intervertebral discs. The constitutive model was implemented in the finite element code SIERRA/Solid Mechanics. This report documents the continuum theory of a transversely isotropic hyperelastic constitutive model with two fiber families and verifies the implementation of the numerical model on a variety of single element tests. The algorithm used to apply this model to spinal intervertebral discs is covered in depth, and an example simulation result is shown. Application of this model to other biological tissues, such as brain tissue and skeletal muscles, is also discussed.
