The effort described in this report consisted of an evaluation of several prototypical components of an electric vehicle battery pack and its safety devices, a critical review of the public technical and patent literature pertaining to combustible gas management, and an experimental evaluation of the best candidate approaches. Three approaches were selected for evaluation: explosion attenuation, hydraulic arresters (water traps), and mechanical module isolation. The major system constraints under which an approach would have to operate were defined as follows: a cost of less than $10 per module, compatibility with a common manifold for watering and venting, and stability in caustic and acid electrolytes. 27 refs., 17 figs., 6 tabs.
