摘要

Objective of the research program was to develop a pilot-plant facility to produce glass-ceramic ('Silceram') by a novel process. In this, a silicate melt was converted to a fine-grained pore-free ceramic during a controlled-cooling heat treatment, removing the need for reheating. The new heat-treatment program offers a substantial saving in thermal energy. The new material had superior mechanical properties. These were extensively studied in laboratory tests, as functions of microstructure and chemical composition. The crystal size of the major silicate phase was about 2 mu m and the porosity was close to zero. The high strength and hardness are associated with excellent resistance to erosion by fluid-borne particle. 9 figs., 13 tabs. (ERA citation 13:009103)
