摘要

Intense plastic defomation due to abrasion is concentrated within a thin surface layer. There are, consequently, extensive microstructural changes from the worn surface to the interior. Microstructural examination of the surface morphology, and the transverse and longitudinal subsurface areas is necessary to elucidate the relationship between microstructures of the steels and the mode and magnitude of the plastic deformation. Some fundamental entities such as dislocation density, cell size and depth of deformation can be measured or estimated. High voltage transmission electron microscopy has been particularly useful in investigating the wear debris particles. A comprehensive mechanism of abrasive wear has been deduced based on these microstructural observations. (ERA citation 10:025814)
