摘要

The text discusses the problem of elderly abuse, provides suggestions for on-going research, identifies organizations that are attacking the problem, annotates a selection of core documents, and lists other relevant references. The incidence of the problem is estimated at between .5 million to 2 million cases annually, and reasons for the wide variation in these estimates are suggested. Characteristics of elder abuse are described: for example, it should be a habitual pattern of behavior, rather than a one-time thing; additionally, the abusive behavior should be of a certain gravity in its consequences. It is pointed out that while physical harm is easily identifiable, neglect and psychological abuse require closer attention and can be ambiguous. For example, if a mother and daughter have been at odds throughout their lifetimes, it is difficult to say at what point abuse sets in. Another criterion for abuse is also suggested: the unnaturalness of the act should strike hard at society's sense of how people ought to behave. The trends in research on elder abuse are discussed; it is noted that such research is likely to finely discriminate among various patterns of behavior which grow out of particular family dynamics. At first, abuse may be seen as a monolithic problem; however, as experience grows, investigators look not only to more informative typologies, but also to distinguish the stages of each type. It is concluded that a deeper knowledge of the predictors of abuse can lead to better fashioned and more timely helping responses.
