The design, construction, operation, and initial results of a Coal Flash Hydropyrolysis (FHP) experimental unit is describedo The purpose of the unit is primarily to obtain process chemistry data for a non-catalytic, gas phase coal liquefaction process. The unit is a highly instrumented facility designed to feed coal up to 1 lb/hr, and hydrogen up to 10 lb Air at design temperatures to 800 C and pressures to 4000 psi. The system incorporates an entrained downflow tubular reactor, 1" I.D. by 8 ft long with a 3 foot cooling section below. The unique coal feeding device is capable of delivering coal to the reactor at flowrates as low as 0.1 lb/hr.
