Today I want to talk about separations of rare earth elements and the heavy actinides which behave so much like them—the elements stuck on the bottom of the periodic chart like a footnote. This will lead to a review of ion exchange and chromatography, and to the pressurized ion exchange technique which we now use for these separations. Finally, I hope to discuss the theory of ion exchange, and indicate the direction toward still better separations.nDiscovery of the first rare earth was claimed by Gasoline in 1795, but later on his "element" turned out to be really a mixture. More and more rare earths were found, many of which turned out not to be elements at all, and finally the last was discovered in 1907, 112 years later;it was lutetium. Element 61, Pm, does not exist in nature, so it was not discovered until later.
