摘要

The occurrence of red mutant sectors within the purple petals and stamen hairs of the hybrid Tradescantia (02 clone) is the most radiosensitive biological indicator known, yet little is published concerning the genetic basis of the changes involved. Inbreeding experiments and sectoring within hairs indicate that the 02 clone is not chimeric, but is overall heterozygous for flower color. Selfing the hybrid yields a typical Mendelian monofactor 3:1 ratio of purple to red-flowered progeny. Red flower color in the recessive progeny is due primarily to the presence of the anthocyanin aglycone, cyanidin; these progeny differ from the parental clone chiefly in their inability to synthesize delphinidin. Sectoring capability is transmissible germinally. The 2:1 ratio of sectoring to non-sectoring plants among purple-flowered progeny confirms that heterozygosity is a prerequisite for sectoring.
