An autoradiometric test method and associated productionninspection equipment have been developed for nondestructively measuring the incremental and total U235 content in cylindrical SNAP fuel rods. The determination is accomplished by measuring the intensity of the 185 kev gamma photo peak from U235 and comparing this value with a reference standard of known composition. A prototype single channel analyzer scintillation counting system and special fuel rod scanning mechanism are described. A statistical evaluation of the autoradiometric and destructive chemical methods disclosed a correlation coefficient between the two methods to be 0.976. The precision of the autoradiometric method was 0.023 wt % uranium when the test samples were fully enriched 10% U-Zr SNAP fuel rods.
