It was shown that by heating calcium carbide to temperatures of 1720 to 1770° at an initial pressure of 0.5 to 1 mm of Hg, dense metallic calcium containing 94. 8 to 98. 2 Ca, and low-ash, high-grade graphite, containing 97% C may be prepared, with a yield of 80 and 90% respectively, for the two products.nIt has been established that the interaction of the technical carbide with its own lime content precedes the dissociation, forming calcium vapor and carbon. This last circumstance must be taken into consideration in the design of the constructional details of the process.
