摘要

An investigation was made to determine the effect of lead additions of 0.17 and 0.25% on the tensile properties and fatigue limit of AISI 4340 steel, heat treated to tensile strength levels ranging from 103,000 to 270,000 psi. It was found that, while lead additions had little effect on the tensile properties of the material, the mean fatigue limit of smooth specimens was decreased slightly at all strength levels above 103,000 psi. Results indicate that there is no apparent difference between the effect on the fatigue properties caused by 0.17% lead additions compared to 0.25% lead additions. Lead additions did not appear to substantially effect the fatigue life of specimens tested at stress levels above the mean fatigue limit.
