A nondestructive method for the determination of the uranium-235 concentration of uranium metal slugs using a gamma scintillation spectrometer has been developed. The method is based on a determina¬tion of the differential counting rate exhibited by the 0. 2 mev photopeak associated with the decay of uranium-235. The method can also be applied to the analysis of the various compounds of uranium for uranium-235 content, although it should find optimum application in the analysis of uniform metal pieces which have a uranium-235 range of 0. 7 to 2.0 weight percent and where a precision of no better than ± 0. 02 weight percent is required. The method may be applied to the analysis of slugs fabricated from recovered uranium only if the precision desired is no better than ± 0.03 weight percent uranium-235.
