In 1999, the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center marks it 25th211u001eanniversary as one of the nation's pioneering scientific computing facilities. 211u001eSince its early days as the Controlled Thermonuclear Research Computer Center 211u001ewhen cycles were provided on borrowed computers, NERSC has evolved to serve a 211u001ewidening user base with state-of-the-art high-performance computers, mass storage 211u001esystems, networking capabilities and intellectual resources. We believe that this 211u001elast component-the intellectual resources of our diverse staff-is what 211u001edifferentiates NERSC from other centers (some of which are now emulating our 211u001emodel) by providing more than just computing resources. Another key element of 211u001eNERSC's successful operation is its ability to anticipate and meet the varying 211u001eneeds of clients. In order to further this strong working relationship, NERSC 211u001estaff and clients meet periodically via our national user group, ERSUG (the 211u001eEnergy Research Supercomputer Users Group) to share view, offer training and 211u001eidentify problems and solutions.
