The site up date for IMOG will cover areas of development in plutonium fabrication over the period of 2003 to 2010. A baseline understanding of the difficulties of machining Plutonium will be presented. This baseline will help listeners to understand the thought process for development of new machines and equipment upgrades for Plutonium fabrication capability, as well as tooling and process enhancements that have been attempted. Known defects that have been observed from existing machining processes, and insert deficiencies will be outlined. Previous studies of machining parameters accompanied by surface finish pictures and machining force data will be presented. The possibility of modeling machining parameters using finite element analysis (FE A) will also be presented.
