摘要

At present the only technique that can be confidently applied to avoid Ferri instability in external compression supersonic air intakes is to prevent a vortex sheet or shear layer from entering the intake within the desired range of mass flow. A margin of stable sub-critical flow can thus only be secured at the expense of pre-entry drag at the critical condition.nObservations made in previous experiments combine to suggest a possible mechanism for the instability, and this has indicated areas where further research is needed to give a thorough understanding of the phenomenon. Possible approaches to the problem of controlling the instability without the currently encountered drag penalty are discussed.
