摘要

A controversy which opposed the American physicist Millikan to the English scientist Jeans is discussed. It is an interesting aspect of a debate about the cultural and social value of science which shook the scientific community as well as the public. Ideological and religious belief concurred with Millikan's scientific work in designing this unified perspective. This American optimism and progressive ideology of science clashed with Jeans' and Eddington's claim of the cosmological validity of the second law of thermodynamics.
