In order to use the Natural Color System, (NCS) and the CIE 1976 system (CIELAB) for color monitors and for computer graphics, analytical relations between the two systems were found. The CIE-tristimulus values of the nominal NCS notations given in SS 019103 were transformed into the CIELAB space. All the data were calculated using CIE standard illuminant C. The three basic variables of the NCS, hue, chromaticness and blackness were transformed into CIELAB hue-angle, chroma and lightness, respectively. The spacing of the NCS hue-circle, when transformed to CIELAB, does not remain as equispaced for all parts of the hue-circle as for the NCS hue-circle. The analytical relations between chromaticness and chroma and between blackness and lightness were achieved by curve fitting techniques. The relation between chromaticness and chroma is expressed for chromaticness values up to 60 by a linear function and for higher levels of chromaticness by an exponential function.
